Senior Applications Engineer
The Role
We need a Senior Applications Engineer to work with our customers as they integrate our software and electronics, and to help bring a customer perspective to our development work. If this job title isn’t currently you, then please still read on: we are very much open to candidates thinking of moving into a customer facing role from a software engineering background or similar.
The Senior Applications Engineer is not a simple support role. Whilst some queries are straightforward to solve, the engineer will need to build a deep knowledge of our wide product range and help problem solve customer challenges as they arise, assisted where needed by our design engineers.
The role is predominately office based, but there will be travel to customer sites, UK and abroad. Travel typically totals around 20 days a year for an engineer established in role, away for up to a week at a time but normally shorter. In the first 1-2 years, as the new joiner meets customers and builds their understanding of our business, travel may be more frequent.
As a Company, Cambridge Pixel is keen to accommodate individuals’ experience and interests where it works for the business. Alongside the primary role, there is also the potential for the Senior Applications Engineer to contribute in one or more of the following areas, where relevant:
- Software development
- User testing of software
- Maintaining and improving our internal IT infrastructure
- User documentation
- Production of training or promotional videos
- Attendance at trade shows
The Person
Whilst the ideal candidate would have a background in radar processing, we recognise such people are few and far between, therefore sector-specific experience is not essential. The main criteria are that you have an engineering mindset, enjoy problem-solving, have an inquisitive mind keen to learn, and get satisfaction helping customers. A calm, methodical approach to work and a strong attention to detail are also very important. We expect that suitable candidates will have a good engineering or other relevant degree, followed by extensive experience either as a software engineer or in a senior technical software support role, but we are open to considering those who have gained relevant expertise by a different route. One route into the role could be to join as a software engineer and gradually transition to the Applications Engineer role.
You will be mentored in your role by our existing engineers; we are expecting an extended training period and are only interested in candidates looking for a professional home for the long term.
Cambridge Pixel is a smaller company; you will need to have initiative and autonomy, and the ability to operate without many of the systems and support structures of larger businesses. Working in smaller companies is hugely rewarding for the right type of person but does not suit everyone; if you don’t have experience in this sort of environment we can discuss what this means in practice during interview.
The post is full time. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a background check for security purposes. You will need to have the right to work in the UK.
Benefits
- Competitive salary + profit share
- 8% Company pension contribution (no personal contribution required)
- Additional personal pension contributions available through salary sacrifice
- Health Insurance for Employee and Family
- Life Insurance
- Company supplied snacks, drinks and fresh fruit
- 25 days of holiday per year, plus public holidays
- 6 “Happy Half Days” of additional holiday per year.
Please do not send us your CV if you are located outside the UK. We only recruit experienced software/system engineers and offer excellent pay and benefits. Please email your CV to [email protected]
Senior Software Engineer
The Role
We are a looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our small team. Our engineers operate independently, working across a range of products from specification through development to test and release. These products include algorithmic server applications, configured through both web UIs and native interfaces; customer specific drivers and network interfaces; client applications; and User Interface software for operator displays and command and control (C2) consoles, built on a common code library that we licence to some customers to incorporate into their own applications.
We program mainly in C++, building for both Windows (Visual Studio) and Linux (GCC), maintaining version control of our code base through an on-prem Git repository. We have some user interface frameworks written in C# .NET and use web languages for those UIs. Our products predominantly communicate over ethernet (TCP/IP and UDP).
The Person
A strong programming ability in C++ is essential for this role. Beyond that, we are looking for someone who is bright, inquisitive, adaptable, and who likes solving problems. A good degree is important, but so is the initiative to understand the operational context of our product and make sensible design decisions, often without detailed specifications. You should be comfortable talking to customer engineers when discussing integration.
