Radar Scan Conversion Formats

Radar Scan Conversion is the process that converts radar video from a range-azimuth format into an alternate coordinate system that makes it easier to visualise. There are a number of common display formats for the display of radar video, including PPI, A-Scan and B-Scan.

PPI Display Mode

The PPI (Plan Position Indicator) view displays the radar as if looking at a plan view of its coverage. It shows a rotating sweep that corresponds to the movement of the antenna. The view shown has the radar at the centre, so the coverage of the radar is represented by a circle. A portion of the display can be selected for a zoom view, a process known as off-centering.

B-Scan Display Mode

Typically used in fire-control situations, the B-Scan mode shows range against azimuth. As the radar rotates, the display updates across the display from left to right.

A-Scan Display Mode

In A-Scan (or A-Scope), the data is displayed as a signal strength of amplitude against time (equivalent to range) for each return. The display is what you'd see if you connected the radar video to an oscilloscope. For a prf of 2 KHz the display would be triggered 2000 times per second showing that number of signal traces.

SPx provides options for PPI, A-Scan and B-Scan display. You can see PPI and A-Scan in the demonstration software that's available from Cambridge Pixel. Click on the image to show a version at 1280 x 1024.
